Debris

Some time ago completed a successful Kickstarter campaign for short story comic anthology 'Debris'
"Anyone who's seen Alfie's work will know that this is just quality through and through... Absolutely amazing. Such a consistent book. Tales of the Unexpected on crack."
- Vince Hunt, Awesome Comics Podcast
"A lovely little package... each story gives you a really different flavour."
- Pete Taylor, Comic Arts Podcast
Have been very fortunate to reach out to a high-caliber range of writers, some of whom I've worked with before; Ryan K Lindsay (ETERNAL, NEGATIVE SPACE, BEAUTIFUL CANVAS), Lee Robson (BABBLE, FUTUREQUAKE, ACES WEEKLY), Martin Hayes (ALEISTER CROWLEY: WANDERING THE WASTE, GENTLEMEN GHOULS, ABOMINABLE GLORY) and new creative swinging partner Fraser Campbell (ALEX AUTOMATIC, SLEEPING DOGS, THE EDGE OFF).
Having created all the pencil/ink work within (also colouring and lettering duties, unless otherwise stated), was also extremely fortunate to utilise colourists such as Ellie Wright, Chris O'Halloran, Triona Farrell and letterer Bram Meehan in helping to piece stories and elements together.

Awesome Podcast-A-Go-Go

I'm guest on the 35th Episode of the Awesome Comics Podcast. A great fun podcast that focuses on all things small press helmed by Vince Hunt, Dan Butcher and Tony Ezoyeh.

They're really passionate and supportive about all things small press and up and coming creators.

I talk about childhood influences, working methods, my Charlatan Tales series. And work with writers Lee Robson, Ryan K Lindsay and Martin Hayes, of whom there should be more news soon of our 'Gentlemen Ghouls' project in Aces Weekly.

First time I did a podcast so was bit jittery/waffley but they treated me gently.

ABC Warriors: Red Spice

After last years 'Anderson, Psi Division: The Line of Duty', I've been fortunate to work with writer Lee Robson again for Zarjaz magazine. This time had the luxury of brick-batting with him from the ground up something we'd both enjoy working on and would hopefully play to both our strengths.

Always had a love of the dark, weird elements of Pat Mills 2000AD universe such as Nemesis the Warlock and elements of ABC Warriors. Lee had a look over my portfolio and saw recurring psychedelic-style elements and mystical hoodoo voodoo motifs such as Tarot card designs. This led to us putting the focus on Deadlock.

Within the strip there is a section that happens on a mystical, spiritual plane (ask Lee to explain, he wrote it!) so to differentiate this section, I brought in ink washes to the background. I'm learning the hard way that ink washes aren't just a gung-ho case of slapping it down, there needs to be a degree of consideration, getting an even wash and gauging the darkness of wash applied (always seems to dry out lighter than it goes down). So not altogether sure how successful this comes through on final pages, but hopefully creates a differentiation between sections happening in the real world (the real world of mercenary robots on Mars) and also brings a bit of hand-applied grime to proceedings.

Really enjoyed working on these pages, hopefully it shows to some degree. The 10 year old me that devoured Best of 2000AD monthlies would be very happy. Found it a really smooth process working from Lee's script. He lays out concise direction, clear and easy to visualize action and he knows when it's fine to step back and let the artist take the wheel and have fun when it comes to defining things. Also, real down to earth guy to have correspondence with, a big help moving things along.

Here's two character sketches I did initially to help me lock in to drawing the lads...

'ABC Warriors: Red Spice' appears in Zarjaz no.25, available now. Spread the word.

Anderson, Psi Division: The Line Of Duty

The latest issue of the 2000AD fanzine Zarjaz, issue 23, contains my first artwork I've done for the Zarjaz/FutureQuake stable.

It's a 6-pager Judge Anderson story, script by Lee Robson, based on an original story by Bryan Coyle.

It was a real luxury working from Lee's scripting where everything led on from scene to scene in a natural, realistic way rather than my own stab at writing my own material over the last few years, which was usually a patchwork of plotholes and massive coincidences.

Really enjoyed depicting Anderson and spending time in her smart, strong company. On my initial image search researching Anderson I was a bit crestfallen to see one too many busty Babs Windsor 'ooh, my zipper just came down and I ain't wearing no bra' style depictions. She definitely deserves better than that.

The full colour promo image was released online just prior to the sad news of Brett Ewins passing. Picking up the baton from Brian Bolland's original Debbie Harryesque depiction of Anderson he really solidified the smart, funny, sexy, humane take on Anderson. As a kid I think I scanned over Ewin's artwork that bit too quickly, but in later years have begun to really appreciate the economy, clean design and humour of his work. So much strong work from one creative; Anderson/Dredd, Bad Company, Johnny Nemo and Skreemer. Also with the founding of Deadline he gave a springboard to Brit indie artists that I love, specifically Philip Bond and Jamie Hewlett.

I'd like to dedicate my work on this strip to his memory and note his passing.

I'm currently finishing up artwork on an ABC Warriors strip for an upcoming Zarjaz, scripted again by Affable Lee Robson.

The latest Zarjaz, and also back issues can be purchased here.
